Picosecond mode switching and Higgs amplitude mode in superconductor-metal hybrid terahertz metasurface

Abstract The ultrafast modulation of terahertz (THz) waves is essential for numerous applications, such as high-rate wireless communication, nonreciprocal transmission, and linear frequency conversion. However, high-speed THz devices are rare due to the lack materials that rapidly respond external stimuli. Here, we demonstrate a dynamic metasurface by introducing an ultrathin superconducting microbridge into metallic resonators form superconductor-metal hybrid structure. Exploiting susceptibility films optical pumps, realized resonance mode switching within few picoseconds. maximum on/off ratio achieved 11 dB. observed periodic oscillation transmission spectra both in time domain under intense pump pulse excitation reveals Higgs amplitude mode, which used realize picosecond scale modulation. This study opens door manipulation using collective modes condensates, highlights avenue developing agile devices.
